So, it’s been quite a while since a huge change came to the form factor of mobile devices, So Samsung decided,” Okay, we’ll give a tablet that fits in your pocket.” And gave us the first ever Galaxy Fold, a tablet with a folding screen. It raised many eyebrows and was supercool to think that you can actually fold the screen of your phone but it was a first-gen product, so it had many issues, like the screen blacking out after people removed the screen protector and the cover display being too small and it was too fragile and also very expensive. Samsung took the whole batch back, fixed it and tried to sell it again.
Now, even though it was a bust but the Fold started a revolution and many brands started making their own different folding phones with different philosophies. Like the Huawei Mate Xs was a outward folding phone, the Motorola Razr is a clamshell folding, the LG Velvet is phone with a secondary screen cover case, etc. But now, Microsoft made one and Samsung is back with second-gen. So, which one is better?
First, let’s talk specs, so the Microsoft Suface Duo has a total 8.1″ dual AMOLED screen taped together with big bezels housing the 11mp 2k camera and a extremely sleek look. It weighs at 250g and Gorilla Glass 5 all around and powering this is the last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with 128gb storage and 6GB RAM. The camera can shoot upto 4k@60fps. It also has a 3577 mAh cell. That rounds pretty much the Surface Duo.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5g, that name is a mouthful, kills the Surface Duo when it comes to specs. It’s has the Samsung’s super AMOLED 7.6″ 120hz display with 373 ppi. It has 4500 mAh battery with 6.2″ super AMOLED 60hz screen with slim bezels all around on the cover display. It is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+. Coming to the cameras, it has five in total, 3 on the back, 1 on the cover display and 1 on the main screen. The main triple camera consist of a 12mp(f/1.8) main shooter with 12mp(f/2.4) 3x telephoto and 12mp(f/2.2) 123° ultrawide angle lens and 10mp(f/2.2) selfie camera on both the cover and main screen. It also stereo speakers tuned by AKG. It comes with two storage options 256gb with 12gb RAM and 512gb with 12gb RAM.
After putting them in a ring together, it’s clear that Galaxy Fold wins, so what’s the point of this comparison? Well there’s more to that than it seems. The Fold will set you back $1999(₹149,999) whereas the Surface Duo will cost you $1400(₹99,999). Now, $1400 is also not cheap by any means in which you can get the ultra premium, the best of Android, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra but if you’re in the market for a foldable, these are your best choices.
Now, you might be skeptical about its durability of the hinge, as its gonna be most used part of the device, the Fold can stand on any position as unfolded and has tiny brushes to keep out the dust from entering whereas the Surface Duo is two separate screens with two top and bottom, 360° hinge. So, it can withstand your daily use but I suggest you to not push it too much. Both phones support fast charging 18w and 25w for the Surface Duo and Fold 2, respectively but only the Fold supports fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging.
I have to talk about their looks because it’s worth talking about in Surface Duo’s case. The Fold, when folded, is really thick like a brick with still a little gap between the screen but the Surface Duo folds flat and it’s really, really sleek looking. When unfolded, it’s almost as thick as a USB type-C port and the camera bump of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But there’s a bit of a trade off, the Fold might be thick but its narrow, so it can fit in your pocket and hand, easily. The Surface Duo has quite a width so it’s hard to use one-handed and you have to use both your hands to adjust the pocket and put it in.
I didn’t compared the Moto Razr 2 or Galaxy Z Flip 5g because they are not the devices you would multitask on and the LG Velvet is not a folding phone, rather it comes with a accessory which you have to buy separately. Apple is also working on this form factor so stay tuned for that one.
