We have the Pixel 5, the new iPhone 12 non-pro models, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and OnePlus’ own 6 month old flagship, the OnePlus 8. Now, the OnePlus is back with their 6 month refresh cycle and gave us the OnePlus 8T.
So, during the first half of 2020, brands were racing towards the mid-range market or the $400 price point and this race gave many good smartphones from Samsung’s A series, the OnePlus Nord, the Google Pixel 4a and also Apple’s iPhone SE but they are now coming to the middle of mid-range and flagship category which is the semi-flagship or the $600-$700 price range.
First, let’s talk specs, it has a 6.55″ 120hz Fluid AMOLED FHD+ flat display with 402 ppi, so the curved edges are gone. It has a quad camera system, a 48mp(f/1.7) main wide lens with OIS, a 123° FOV 16mp(f/2.2) ultrawide and a 5mp macro and a monochrome sensor. It has a 16mp(f/2.4) wide lens on the front. It can shoot upto 4k@60fps. Powering this is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, so its 5G enabled and it comes two storage variants, 128gb with 8gb RAM and 256gb with 12gb RAM with UFS 3.1 storage. Also, I didn’t understand the use of two flash on the back.
It comes in two colors, Lunar Silver which is matte and a glossy Aquamarine Green which changes between blue and green depending upon how light hits it. It two 2250mAh battery combining to a 4500mAh cell, now OnePlus split the battery to keep the phone cool during charging because the 8T comes with a insane 65w charger out-of-the-box, they call it the Warp Charge 65. Talking about keeping the phone cool, the new vapour chamber is, according to them, 285% bigger and it is,after Google, to come with Android 11 out-of-the-box.
As the OnePlus 8, there is no wireless charging and a official IP rating and OnePlus also confirmed that there will be no OnePlus 8T pro this year, and the OnePlus 8 pro is still the best among them. Putting this against its competitors, it really comes down to personal preference because all the phones in this price range trade blows, if you have a preference for iPhones then you’ll go for the iPhone 12s or the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition or the Pixel 5 but the Pixel 5 has a lower 90hz refresh rate as compared to 120hz of the S20 FE or the 8T and it also comes with the upper mid range chip, the Snapdragon 765G but both the 8T and S20 FE come with the flagship Snapdragon 865 and 865+, respectively.
It is gonna set you back $749(₹42,999) but it’s still good run for your money but in India, its almost half the price of the iPhone 12 and 12 mini and $100 cheaper than the Galaxy S20 FE, also Pixel 5 is not coming to India, so it seems like a no brainer.
